Music in Drama Scheme of Work

(ages 13-14)

Overview

This six-lesson practical unit explores how music can shape mood, atmosphere and meaning within devised drama. Through guided warm-ups, spontaneous mime, symbolism exercises and physical theatre, students respond to audio tracks and develop short scenes. Lessons include specific classroom activities (for example the 'Balloon Race' warm-up and use of the track 'Smoking Gun') and build towards a performance-based assessment where learners demonstrate interpretation and use of music, symbolism and movement.

What Students Will Learn

Across the unit students learn to interpret how different pieces of music affect tempo, rhythm, mood and imagery, and to use those musical cues as a basis for devising. They apply symbolism, icons/objects and colour, practise physical theatre and mime techniques, and develop scenes that change meaning through contrasting musical choices before preparing for a final assessment.
