Melodrama Scheme of Work
(ages 12-13)
Overview
This six-week scheme introduces KS3 students to melodrama through practical, teacher-led workshops and class performance. The unit explores Victorian stock characters, relationships, heightened performance styles and atmosphere using mime, split scenes, monologues and movement. Lessons move from character creation to scene work and analysis of a Maria Marten film extract, finishing with a filmed performance assessment. Included resources support practical delivery: character music clips, a PowerPoint slide and a short film clip to prompt learning and staging.
What Students Will Learn
Students will learn the conventions of melodrama and how to create exaggerated, stock characters using physicality and vocal choices. They will practise mime, split scenes, monologue and aside, devise movement pieces and freeze frames, and study a Maria Marten extract to explore mise-en-scène, costume and lighting. The unit culminates in prepared performances that are recorded for teacher-led assessment and self-reflection, with emphasis on atmosphere, storytelling and character relationships.
