Unit Planning for Mixed-Curriculum Drama Classes

How to design units that meet multiple specifications while maintaining clear learning progression for students.

Teaching drama to a mixed-curriculum cohort often feels like managing overlapping maps. Different specifications place emphasis on different tasks: devised work, scripted performance, written portfolios, research folders, or practical exams. Timetables, cohort sizes and mixed-age groups may further complicate planning. A practical way to manage this is to design units that foreground common, transferable skills while leaving space for specification-specific evidence.

That approach tends to reduce duplication of teaching and clarify assessment choices for students. It also helps teachers avoid separate tracks for each specification where resources and time are thin. The aim is not to erase the distinct demands of each course. Instead, units may be shaped so that one set of activities can generate artefacts that meet multiple assessment briefs.

The core concept is a shared-skills framework. This is a mapped set of theatrical skills and habits – for example, character development, vocal and physical clarity, collaborative devising, contextual research and analytical reflection – that appear across most specifications. Once mapped, those skills can be sequenced and assessed with small adjustments to meet individual course criteria. How to build a shared-skills framework

Begin by placing the specifications side by side and extract common assessment objectives. Look for language that repeats: creativity, communication, analysis, or realisation. Those repeated terms signal areas where a single learning activity may produce evidence for several specifications.

Create a skills bank drawn from that comparison. Each entry should be short and observable: for example, ‘sustain a character over a three-minute scene’ or ‘apply research to justify design choices’. The bank may be ordered by cognitive load so that early units target accessible skills and later units demand synthesis across skills.

Map assessment tasks to that bank. Decide which classroom tasks will generate evidence for which specification. An improvised scene might feed into a devised piece for one specification and supply rehearsal footage and reflective writing for another. Label tasks clearly so students know how a single activity connects to their assessment requirements.

Sequencing an exemplar eight-week unit

Consider an eight-week unit that aims to serve students preparing for a performance exam, a written portfolio, and a devised assessment. Weeks one and two tend to focus on technique and shared vocabulary. Short exercises that isolate voice, movement and responding to stimuli may be used by all students to build fluency. These sessions often form the basis of diagnostic evidence.

Weeks three and four can prioritise exploration and research. Small groups may generate short devising prompts based on a given stimulus. At this stage, research tasks may branch: some students collect contextual material for written analysis while others test the same material in rehearsal. The key is that the research feeds directly into practical choices so that it becomes assessable for both practical and written components.

Weeks five and six typically move into refinement. Groups develop one piece to a performanceable standard. For students on specifications that require written portfolios, the refinement phase is an opportunity to produce recorded rehearsal extracts and reflective annotations. The final two weeks are for assessment and reflection. Presentations may be structured so that each group produces a short live performance, a recorded clip and a reflective statement. Those three outputs can be graded against different specifications with minor rubric adjustments. Where a formal exam board requires a specific duration or evidence type, build that requirement into the final week’s rehearsal plan rather than treating it as an add-on.

Differentiation strategies for mixed cohorts

Different specifications often mean different depths of written work or specific performance lengths. Differentiation may be organised by product, role and process. Product differentiation adjusts the expected evidence. Role differentiation assigns students to roles that match their assessment needs. Process differentiation alters the scaffolding and time given.

For example, a group devising a scene can allocate the written-research task to one student, the technical design notes to another, and lead acting responsibilities to a third. Those roles may rotate across units so students develop broad competencies. Where some students require extended written analysis, provide sentence starters or templates that link rehearsal choices to critical language.

Scaffolding may include tiered success criteria. A simple rubric might describe three levels of achievement for a single skill, with descriptors that align to each specification’s language. During class, use short, focused feedback checkpoints so students know which descriptor they are working towards. Practical classroom examples

One useful practice is workshop rotation. Rotate groups through stations focused on voice, physical storytelling, research and rehearsal. Each station produces a small artefact: a recorded vocal line, a photograph sequence, a research note, or a rehearsal clip. Collecting these artefacts creates a portfolio that can be edited into specification-specific submissions.

Another approach is the learning menu. Present three or four routes through the same stimulus: a performance route, a research-and-analysis route, and a design-focused route. Students choose a route aligned to their specification but share a common exhibition at the unit’s end. This keeps whole-class teaching manageable while respecting assessment differences.

When moderating assessment, convene brief internal standardisation meetings. Compare a practical extract against the specifications and note how one teaching activity produced evidence for multiple briefs. Keep records of adjustments made for each student so that external moderators can follow your decisions.

Workload, tracking and sustainability

Planning for multiple specifications can increase marking and administrative load. Mitigate that by standardising templates for feedback and by using shared rubrics. Record-keeping that maps activities to specification outcomes tends to save time during moderation and when responding to queries.

Sampling is another practical measure. Rather than marking every piece in full for every student, sample evidences across groups and cross-reference the skills bank. This may make internal moderation simpler and keep workload within reasonable bounds.

Over time, small adjustments to the conditions around this can make the skill feel more accessible.

Decisions about sequencing and differentiation often reflect local constraints: timetable, room availability and staffing. Keep track of what worked and what did not. That record becomes the basis for adapting future units so that shared activities continue to serve multiple specifications without doubling teachers’ workload.
