This focus is less about fancy plugins and more about two steady priorities: intelligibility and theatrical atmosphere. Intelligibility means dialogue and key sound events are easily heard on laptops and phones. Equalisation, or EQ, is the tool that tends to help most with intelligibility. Reducing low-frequency rumble under speech can clear the mid-range where consonants live. A gentle boost in the upper mids can improve clarity for many voices, but that should be applied with care to avoid sibilance. Compression helps level delivery so quiet lines don’t disappear and loud lines don’t dominate, but heavy compression can rob performance of dynamic nuance.

For streamed pieces, consider how loudness normalisation is handled by platforms. Streaming services often apply gain to fit their loudness target, which may push up noise floors or change perceived balance. Mixing with a modest peak ceiling and avoiding extreme dynamic swings may result in a more predictable translation. Stereo placement can create width, but when in doubt for dialogue-led scenes, centre speech and use stereo for ambience and effects.

Layering is where pedagogical creativity pays off. Encourage students to think like sound designers by collecting small, purposeful sounds: footfalls on different surfaces, the rustle of a costume, the resonance of a door. These can be recorded simply on a phone and cleaned up later. When layered beneath dialogue, they add texture and suggest action without competing for clarity.

Use room tone as a glue. Recording thirty seconds of silence in the space produces a noise profile that can be used to smooth edits and avoid the jarring sensation of cuts. Crossfades and gentle fades also help maintain continuity when scenes are stitched together from multiple takes.

Reverb is a theatrical shortcut that often needs restraint. A short, subtle reverb can restore a performance’s sense of place. Long or heavily coloured reverbs may sound lush on studio monitors but fall apart on small speakers. Consider using pre-recorded impulse responses of real rooms if you have access, or a simple plate or hall setting with short decay if you do not.

For hybrid work where live and pre-recorded elements coexist, route the live mix so that the streamed audience hears a consolidated, intelligible feed. That feed may differ from what an in-room audience hears. A separate “stream mix” can favour dialogue and critical cues, while the in-room mix preserves the fullness and theatre presence.

Creative layering also extends to temporal space. Small delays or echoes, subtly timed, can suggest distance or memory. These treatments tend to read well across devices when used sparingly and when the direct speech remains dominant.

Classroom exercises that focus on listening can be effective. One simple task is to have students watch a clip on a phone and note which words or moments are unclear. Then replay alternate mixes that emphasise different elements. This develops a practical ear for what survives compression and small speakers.

When students mix, frame decisions as trade-offs. Increasing ambience may enhance atmosphere, but it can also reduce intelligibility. Encouraging negotiation of those trade-offs mirrors the collaborative work they already do on staging and performance.

Technical constraints often become creative constraints. Working with a modest two-track recording may encourage more precise editing and stronger sound choices than a complex multitrack session. Teaching that mindset can feel freeing for ensembles that have limited time.
