Designing Accessible Digital Performances

You are working with a group of students to make work that will live on screens. Time, equipment and administrative limits often shape what is possible. Yet the same small choices that ease technical production can also open performances to people who would otherwise be excluded.

Accessibility here means attending to how people receive work through sight, hearing and the mechanics of playback. That includes captions for people who are deaf or hard of hearing; audio description for people who are blind or have low vision; a clear visual language that translates stagecraft to a screen; and platform choices that respect bandwidth, privacy and playback features.

Practical approaches tend to be modest, repeatable and adaptable to school conditions. When I describe checklists and low-effort adaptations below, I mean options that can be introduced into rehearsals, filming and assessment without overhauling practice.

Captions: more than a transcript

Captions may be used as subtitles for dialogue or as a fuller transcript including speaker labels and non-speech sounds. They often help students who struggle with literacy, English as an additional language, or noisy viewing environments. Captions also support formal assessment, where clarity of text can aid marking and reflection.

Practical classroom dilemma: you have limited time and no captioner. A low-effort route tends to be to produce a clean transcript from a rehearsal recording and then use automated caption tools as a first pass. Automated captions often mishear names, abbreviations and theatrical terms; correct these errors in a short manual pass rather than starting from scratch.

Captions checklist: ensure each caption segment is short and readable on screen; identify speakers when voices overlap; include non-speech sounds that carry meaning (for example, [door slams] or [music swells]); export captions as VTT or SRT files so they can be toggled on and off; keep line length under what the platform renders without truncation.

Audio description: creating equivalent visual access

Audio description describes visual information that is important for understanding a performance. It is not a running commentary, but a carefully timed layer that fills gaps during natural pauses. In a classroom setting, audio description can be added in two ways: live during a screening, or as a recorded separate audio track that can be mixed into the file.

Classroom example: when students create a short filmed scene, one student can record an audio description track in a quiet space using a simple phone mic. Keep descriptions concise and focused on essential visual choices such as gestures, costume changes, spatial relationships and significant props. Time the descriptions to sit in the pauses between lines.

Audio description checklist: write short descriptive notes keyed to timestamps; prioritise information that affects plot, character or spatial understanding; avoid interpreting emotional intent as fact—describe what is visible, not why it exists; provide the track as a separate downloadable audio file and offer notes for a live reader if required.

Clear visual language for the camera

Stage habits do not always translate to screen. Onstage, an actor can project to the back row; on camera, subtleties may be invisible if framing, lighting and movement are not considered. Clear visual language means choosing images that communicate reliably across devices and viewing conditions.

Simple adaptations can make a big difference. Standardise framing so that important actions happen within an inner safe area that reads on phones and laptops. Use consistent lighting to avoid deep shadows that obscure facial expression. Reduce small, fast-moving gestures that vanish on low-frame-rate streams. When a symbolic object matters, make it visually distinct through contrast or repetition so it reads even in compressed video.

Classroom dilemma: students want rapid cutting and experimental edits, but viewers may be watching on low bandwidth. One approach is to create an "edit map" that shows where cuts are essential to meaning and where single longer shots would suffice. This can preserve creative choices while improving legibility for viewers with slow connections.

Visual clarity checklist: test footage on a phone with lowered brightness; choose high-contrast costumes or markers where character identification is important; keep essential actions centred in frame; avoid fine patterning or small text on costumes; provide a short verbal or captioned preface if symbolism is dense.

Platform choices and playback options

Platform decisions shape what accessibility features are available and how students engage with work. Free and ubiquitous platforms may offer auto-captioning and speed controls but carry privacy or commercial constraints. School-managed platforms can protect student data and host multiple audio tracks, but may lack user-friendly caption editors.

Consider who will watch and how. If parents, external assessors or community members will view performances, choose a platform that supports captions and optional audio tracks. If students have sporadic internet, provide downloadable files and transcripts. If you need to protect student images, use password-protected pages or internal learning platforms rather than public hosting.

Platform checklist: check that captions can be toggled and edited; confirm separate audio tracks are supported or that you can upload an alternative video with mixed-in audio description; test playback speed controls and keyboard navigation; verify privacy settings and simple access for non-technical viewers.

Low-effort adaptations and rehearsal practices

Small rehearsal habits can embed accessibility without adding heavy workload. Marking key moments in scripts for visual description, pausing to allow caption reading, and recording a rehearsal run specifically for captioning can become routine. Encourage students to consider multiple audiences when they make creative decisions.

Example adaptation: run a "silent watch" in which performers play a scene without spoken lines while a narrator reads a short scene description. This reveals whether visual storytelling is legible and also generates text that can be adapted into captions or audio description notes.

Another modest change is to rehearse with caption visibility in mind. When blocking, ask whether lip-reading or exaggerated mouth shapes might help; when noting sound cues, decide whether these should be captioned or described in an audio track. These are practical conversations, not additional creative constraints.

Over time, small adjustments to the conditions around this can make the skill feel more accessible.

When planning assessment or public showings, keep a simple delivery pack ready: a clean transcript, caption files in common formats, a separate audio description track, and brief viewer notes on how to access these features. That pack tends to reduce friction and allows teachers to accommodate requests without last-minute scrambling.
