Differentiated lesson design
Differentiation in drama tends to work best when it is planned rather than improvised. Start from a single learning intention, then map a few ways learners can demonstrate it. These are not tiers of ability but alternative routes in.
For example, if the aim is to explore status relationships, one student set might create a still tableau, another might use movement, and a third might write or record short speech fragments to inform the scene. Each route values the same dramatic thinking—choices about space, focus and relationship—while offering different physical, verbal or cognitive demands.
Time and grouping are useful levers. Shorter, repeated runs of an activity can suit learners who find extended attention difficult. Assessment and feedback
Assessment in drama may feel slippery because the subject values process as much as product. That can be handled by clarifying the focus before a task. Feedback practices can be made accessible by separating audience response from peer critique. An audience clap or gesture can acknowledge effort without requiring verbal evaluation. There are practical tensions to manage. One common dilemma is balancing authenticity with safety. Finally, consider the classroom culture you model. Regular routines, visible expectations and options for quieter participation can reduce cognitive load for many students.
