Designing progression models across Key Stages

Progression in drama is a practical, often messy matter of sequencing skills, experience and reflection so that students build confidence and craft over time. Teachers juggle short schemes, exam specifications, limited rehearsal space and mixed-ability groups. A clear model can help with planning and assessment while remaining adaptable to the classroom realities you face.

When I write about progression here, I mean a deliberately shaped route through knowledge, skills and habits rather than a checklist of lessons. The same model can be used to decide what to teach, when to revisit ideas, and how to show growth across Key Stages.

There are different model types to consider: linear, spiral and competency-based. Each has practical implications for sequencing, assessment workload and flexibility within mixed-age or constrained-timetable settings. Linear models: clarity and focus

A linear model lays out discreet learning aims in sequence. For example, Year 7 might focus on basic ensemble work and vocal clarity, Year 8 on characterisation and applying basic conventions, and Year 9 on sustained performance and devising. The appeal is straightforward mapping: each year has clear targets that build toward assessment points at GCSE or other qualifications.

Linear models can suit departments with heavy exam accountability or short-term staffing, because expectations are explicit. They can, however, feel rigid in classrooms where students need repetition, or where project time varies. They also tend to push teachers toward covering content rather than returning to secure earlier skills.

Spiral models: revisiting and deepening

A spiral model returns to key ideas at increasing depth. Early years introduce simple ensemble games, later years revisit ensemble with layered complexity, then again with leadership and direction. The spiral model treats early encounters as foundations rather than end points.

This approach can work well when continuity matters and when students benefit from spaced practice. It suits departments that value slow development and have the flexibility to cycle themes over several terms. It may demand careful record-keeping so teachers can see how earlier learning is being deepened rather than repeated superficially.

Spiral in practice

One simple example is staging. In Key Stage 2 students learn basic stage positions and levels. At Key Stage 3 they revisit staging with intention—entering and exiting with purpose, using levels to define relationships. At Key Stage 4 staging becomes part of design and directorial choice. Each revisit adds craft and decision-making.

Competency-based models: mastery and transfer

Competency-based models define a set of core competences—such as devising process, performance technique, verbal analysis and technical literacy—and track when students demonstrate them independently. Progression is shown by increasing complexity of tasks and the degree of independence rather than by year group alone.

These models can support mixed-age groups and portfolio-based assessment. They may reduce repetition because once a competence is demonstrated it is recorded and teachers move on to wider applications. The trade-off is the need for shared criteria that staff agree on and can moderate reliably.

Choosing the right model for your context

Choice often starts with constraints. If staffing or space forces short projects, a linear model can give predictable targets. If you have stable staffing and several terms to cycle themes, a spiral model may be kinder to students who need repeated practice. If you serve a broad intake with varied starting points, competency-based approaches can honour individual trajectories.

Consider assessment burden. Competency-based systems need reliable recording and moderation to avoid inconsistency. Linear models can simplify reporting but might pressure teachers to rush. Spiral models need a shared language so different teachers know what earlier encounters looked like.

Curriculum alignment matters too. If your department feeds into formal qualifications with specific skills, you may blend models—use a spiral curriculum for habit formation and a linear overlay to meet examination milestones. Departments often find hybrid approaches more practical than committing to a single philosophy.

Concrete progression markers: examples that show year-on-year development

Below are illustrative markers organised by broad strands. Each marker notes an observable change you can expect as students move through Key Stages. These are not exhaustive, but they aim to make progression tangible.

Devising process: Early primary encounters involve collaborative idea generation and simple narrative sequencing. By lower secondary students are using stimulus, role and structure to create short devised pieces. By upper secondary students plan with intention—documenting rehearsal choices, editing material for impact and justifying creative decisions with reference to audience and form.

Performance technique: In early years focus is on audibility, clear gestures and basic concentration. Mid-teen students apply vocal variety, sustained physical choices and consistent focus during longer scenes. Senior students integrate style, subtext and technical control to create layered performances across varied conventions.

Responding and analysis: Younger students describe what happened and who did what. At Key Stage 3 students begin to use subject-specific vocabulary—convention, tension, proxemics—to explain choices. By Key Stage 4 and 5 students make comparative judgements, link practice to intention and use wider contextual knowledge to justify interpretative choices.

Ensemble and leadership: Early stages emphasise listening and turn-taking in group tasks. Later stages expect students to lead warm-ups, structure rehearsals and make dramaturgical decisions collaboratively. In advanced stages individuals can direct a miniature production, delegating and integrating technical input.

Technical and design skills: Primary work might involve simple set pieces and props used imaginatively. Secondary students explore lighting, sound and costume as expressive tools. Post-16 learners design coherent technical packages and communicate specifications to crews, with working knowledge of health and safety and basic technical processes.

Year-on-year markers: an example sequence for Key Stage 3

Year 7: Students can sustain a character for short scenes and follow clear rehearsal routines. Year 8: They begin to control vocal and physical choices across longer pieces and experiment with simple conventions such as tableau or hot-seating. Year 9: Students transfer character work into devising contexts, justify choices using vocabulary, and perform with consistent focus under basic technical conditions.

Putting models into practice

Begin by mapping what you already teach onto one of the models, then test it with a small unit. Use examples above as reference markers and note where students typically plateau. Keep records that capture evidence of the learning process—not just final performances—so adjustments are based on student work rather than memory.

Moderation matters. Share exemplars of work at each marker so colleagues and newer staff can calibrate judgements. Use short, focused rubrics that describe observable behaviour rather than abstract traits. Over time, small adjustments to the conditions around this can make the skill feel more accessible.

Finally, accept that any model will need local tuning. Time, space and people shape what is realistic. Choosing a model is less an act of commitment than an organisational decision that you can refine as your department collects evidence and gains confidence in the language of progression.
