6 Drama Lesson Plans for Year 9 (Ages 13-14 yrs)

This scheme of work looks at techniques developed by three of the most influential practitioners of modern drama: Constantin Stanislavski, Augusto Boal and Bertolt Brecht. Two lessons are provided on each, giving comprehensive introductions to Stanislavski's System, Boal's Theatre of the Opressed and Brecht's Epic Theatre. The unit is supported by numerous resources and is suitable for Year 9 students and above.

Each lesson plan has clearly stated objectives and learning outcomes. They are structured to include introductory warm up, development and plenary sessions. A homework task is also included.

This scheme of work contains 6 drama lesson plans.

  • Lesson 1: Introducing Stanislavski's System

    Students learn to apply the system when creating and developing characters, using their imagination and the Magic If theory. The creation of a Role on the Wall character forms the homework for this lesson.
  • Lesson 2: Applying Stanislavski's System to Text

    Objectives, Units of Action and Emotion Memory are introduced and applied to a monologue from Easter by August Strindberg.
  • Lesson 3: Boal's Theatre of the Oppressed

    Boal's ideas are introduced through a starter activity using situation cards and a whole class activity resolving a family situation using objective cards.
  • Lesson 4: Boal's Forum Theatre

    Groups devise part of a scene using objective cards which is then workshopped through Forum Theatre.
  • Lesson 5: Brecht's Epic Theatre

    The class warms up with exaggerated stretching exercises before developing exaggerated stereotypes. A set of images is then use to invoke emotional responses, revealing humanity to humanity and the alienation effect.
  • Lesson 6: A speech by Gandhi is read in different styles, before the key elements of Epic Theatre are used to develop and narrate a scene in Brechtian style.
