6 Drama Lesson Plans for Year 7 (Ages 11-12yrs)

This scheme of work explores the Christmas tradition of pantomime, introducing students to the stock characters and phrases. The students will learn to understand the importance of exaggerated body language, facial expressions and gestures, along with audience generated sound effects. The scheme culminates in the adaptation of a piece of text - Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves - into a pantomime.

Each lesson plan has clearly stated objectives and learning outcomes. They are structured to include introductory warm up, development and plenary sessions. A homework task is also included.

  • Lesson 1: Introducing Pantomime

    Understanding the basic elements of pantomime with the help of 'The Chinese Mime' game.
  • Lesson 2: Exaggerated Characters

    Learning the vocal and movement skills necessary to create a pantomime character.
  • Lesson 3: Exaggerated Movement

    Development of body language, facial expressions and mime skills using scenarios and frozen pictures.
  • Lesson 4: Sounds

    Creating group sound effects and sonomimes.
  • Lesson 5: Creating a Pantomime from a story

    Class read through and discussion of ideas for Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves.
  • Lesson 6: Assessment - Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves

    Students perform in a practical assessment based on Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves.
